Find help buying a home in Virginia.
Choose your location and a few details to explore grants and homebuyer assistance. Confirm eligibility with the program and a lender.
Find your options
Start with a location, then narrow your options.
Income means gross annual household income. “First-time” definitions vary; some programs count buyers who have not owned in three years.
Programs to explore
Estimate cash needed at closing
Choose a program and its published maximum fills in automatically to illustrate cash needed at closing. This does not calculate your monthly payment or determine eligibility.
Enter an amount to explore. A lender or program administrator must confirm any actual award.
How the money works together
Some assistance can be combined, but a buyer cannot simply add every advertised maximum. Virginia Housing permits its grants with eligible non-Virginia Housing assistance. VIDA has been used with DHCD assistance. FHLBank Atlanta's First-time Homebuyer and Community Partners products cannot be combined on the same home.
Grant, loan or reduced price?
A true grant does not require repayment. A deferred or forgivable loan may become repayable if you sell, move or refinance before its required period ends. A discounted home comes with property-specific restrictions.
Start early
HOME of Virginia offers free buyer education and counseling. A counselor can help you get mortgage-ready and identify local assistance before you sign a purchase contract.
